Solo Project - Published 2022
In 2021 I developed a solo project, and after publishing it I wanted to go for a round two. Hangry Birb Sort is another game I developed mostly on my own. I worked on the game design, development, and even a little bit of promotion material. I commissioned an artist, as working on the visuals wasn’t a goal of mine for this project.
The purpose of this project was to develop and publish a second more polished game.
Process
Instead of starting with a list of verbs, I drew inspiration from an old mini-game I used to play as a kid. It was a Bomb-Omb sorting game played on the Nintendo DS called Sort or ‘Splode. I roughed out some ideas on paper, including the core gameplay, flow of the game, and the different menus that would be needed.
Knowing this, I quickly put together a prototype to get a feel for how it would play. Once I had the prototype, I worked threw a few gameplay iterations until I had a fun game on my hands.
Art wasn’t a goal of mine for this project, but I still wanted it to be at least somewhat visually appealing. Thus, I commissioned an artist. I worked with the artist, sharing my vision and providing some reference material.
Finished Product
After a year working on this project, I ended up with a successful project and shipped the game to the Google Play Store. It didn’t run any impressive numbers, but I am happy with the project and the experience gained from working on it.
P.S. ‘Hangry Birb Sort’ is definitely a bad name for a game… It’s not the kind of thing people can easily read at a glance or Google search for (due to similar spelling to other words)
